This adventure begins at the Brooklyn Museum in Brooklyn, New York. Upon entering the museum, visitors are greeted by an impressive fine art collection, ushered in by this colorful abstract piece depicting a cheerleader (titled “Blue Horn”), created by Derek Fordjour in 2017. Fordjour was born in Memphis, Tennessee in 1974. He states in the piece’s caption that the contrast between the cheerleader’s bright uniform and the “jungle-like-backdrop” represents his questioning of racialized and gendered bodies in sports. He created this piece using oil pastels, charcoal, acrylic, cardboard, and newspapers.
