The editors of the Cardinal Chronicle take on a tremendous amount of work each publication, editing all the articles even when writing articles of their own. However, many readers don’t even know who they are, and it’s time that they get to know the people behind the scenes a bit better.
Of the ten members on the new editorial board, only three were on the editorial board last year, one of whom is rising senior Poppy Wedding, the Photography editor. Wedding has loved writing since her early childhood; in fact, she was even part of her school’s newspaper in middle school.
Wedding is more widely known across the school for her musical talents due to her Fine Arts Week performances and her extended play(a collection of music typically smaller than an album) “Sick” which she released earlier this year. Outside of photography and music, Wedding is a swimmer and a self-described “quiet leader.” Wedding credits her family and teachers for shaping her friendly, welcoming and optimistic mindset.
This year, the Cardinal Chronicle’s newest section, Scitech, is getting its first official editor, Arya Choudhury (11). In his freetime, Choudhury enjoys playing Dungeons & Dragons, video games, and writing. Choudhury has a curious mind with a frequently shifting focus. For example, the subjects of his articles have ranged from the scientifically ideal way to stack a burger to sounds that can boil water. Choudhury likes to be thought of as someone who is kooky and eccentric.
Entering into her senior year is Sarah Larsen, the next Sports editor. Larsen, who joined the Cardinal Chronicle as a freshman, enjoys reading, writing, and spending time with her friends and family, especially her dog. Larsen is passionate about being able to advocate for herself and others, and fittingly participates in Forensics because she enjoys figuring out how to articulate her thoughts. Larsen manages to be strong and dedicated while maintaining a humorous and approachable persona.
When it comes to next year’s Opinions editor, there is no better fit than Crystal Huang (10). Huang is a creative and innovative thinker; she is extremely organized and reliable. In terms of extracurriculars, Huang enjoys participating in clubs such as Debate and Student Council; however, she also enjoys keeping a balance between her academics, extracurriculars and her hobbies such as writing, arts and crafts and baking. Huang is eager to be able to contribute to the club atmosphere in the coming year.
Hannah Lee, a rising junior, is next year’s Lifestyles editor. Lee first joined the Cardinal Chronicle for the community and to gain writing experience. Outside of writing, Lee also enjoys reading, playing cello and doing martial arts. In her freetime she enjoys watching horror television shows such as “The Walking Dead”. Lee is organized and responsible; she tries her best on a daily basis to work hard and ensure that she won’t regret the actions she takes in the future.
A thespian and musical artist, Isa Killian (10) is next year’s Arts and Entertainment editor. Killian’s choice to join the Cardinal Chronicle was motivated by an early interest in journalism. In fact, she started a school newspaper in her elementary school. Alongside being kind and charming, Killian seems to have an ever expanding array of skills such as being an MHS theater officer, a singer, a pianist, a writer, a lover of literature and a guitar player. Any one who has met her can plainly see that Isa Killian is a passionate and hard worker.
Rio Zhu (10), next year’s Features editor, initially joined the Cardinal Chronicle to support a friend who enjoys writing; however, she has grown to be an exceptional reporter in her own right. Zhu enjoys cello, music, drawing and science. Zhu is a great collaborator and is very straightforward, which helps those receiving constructive critiques improve much faster. In her freetime, Zhu enjoys watching television, playing video games and reading. Post-graduation, Zhu wants to go into a STEM field, specifically biology. Zhu wants everyone to know that they should join the Cardinal Chronicle and give journalism a try, because you never know what you may enjoy.
Future News editor Shaila Holland (10) harbors an unending passion for journalism and how its dispersion of information affects people. Holland specifically enjoys investigative journalism because it acts as a cross between criminology and journalism. In her free time, Holland also enjoys playing violin, creative writing, reading and watching movies with her sister. Holland is excited to be the News editor and hopes to cultivate a wider audience and increase the impact of The Cardinal Chronicle.
Eunice Chung, who will be continuing her role as the Art Hub director, will also take on a new role as Managing Editor. This new role has different responsibilities such as supporting the Editor-In-Chief in their duties, regardless there is no doubt that Chung will take this position in stride. Outside of the newspaper, Chung enjoys reading, writing, playing cello and spending time with her dog. She’s also interested in English and international relations. In her daily life, Chung puts an emphasis on connecting with people and always being compassionate and patient.
Finally, Benjamin Zumbrunnen is the next Editor-In-Chief. Outside of the Cardinal Chronicle he participates in marching, concert, and jazz band where he is a trombone player and drum major. He’s interested in politics, especially in regards to higher education. Zumbrunnen also has a black belt in taekwondo despite not taking lessons anymore. Zumbrunnen is a patient and enthusiastic leader who always ensures morale is high whether it be through being humorous or helpful.
