Robin Furlong, 9, Rain on St. John’s Road, Robin Furlong, produced digital from scratch on GarageBand.
When Robin saw the theme “water” it made her think of a song she listened to a lot as a kid, “Spiegel im Spiegel”. Robin always thought the piano that repeated throughout the piece sounded like raindrops, so she decided to take inspiration from raindrops on a simple synth lead that repeats throughout the song. Robin tried sticking to the theme through the intro, but she let the flow take her through with the rest of the song. To achieve the water feel, Robin used aquatic sounding synths, reverb FX on various instruments to sound underwater, and flowy natural drums to go with rhythmic raindrop-like leads. The title comes mostly from what inspired the piece, “Spiegel im Spiegel” and rain. “Spiegel im Spiegel” was most relevant in Robin’s life between the ages of six and eight when she lived on St. John’s Road, a street in Dublin, Ireland that saw lots of rain.
