Super Mario Bros. was made by Nintendo on Sept. 13, 1985, around forty years ago. The franchise has since grown to contain over three hundred games—of these, twenty-four are “mainline” games—a Nintendo-endorsed holiday on March 10 and two movies, one of which comes out next month. With March 10, or “MAR10” Day, being this past Tuesday, let’s look at some upcoming Nintendo installments:
- Mario Clash, Mario Tennis, and Mario vs. Donkey Kong — Originally released on Sept. 28, 1995, July 21, 2000, and May 26, 2004, respectively. Nintendo Switch Online release date: March 10. It was recently added to Nintendo Switch Online.
- Super Mario Bros. Wonder for Nintendo Switch 2 and its Meetup in Bellabel Park DLC — Slated to be released March 26 and expected to feature new, enhanced content, including playable Rosalina and Co-Star Luma, along with additional Koopaling boss courses.
- “The Super Mario Galaxy Movie” — Release dates are April 1 (U.S.) and April 24 (Japan), 2026 and it is confirmed by Universal and Nintendo as the sequel to the 2023 hit, The Super Mario Bros. Movie.
- Yoshi and the Mysterious Book — Release date is May 21, which was revealed on March 10 with the release of a new trailer titled, “Creature Discovery!”
- Untitled Mario Kart installment — Release in 2026 and rumored to be a major launch title for the Switch 2, likely featuring new designs inspired by the Wonder game and Mario movie.
- Super Mario Maker 3 — Release in 2026 and expected to introduce new creation tools, potentially announced around the launch of the next Nintendo console.
- Untitled three-dimensional Mario game — Release in 2026 as a new 3D Mario game that is heavily rumored for release in 2026. It will likely serve as a major, holiday-season title for the Nintendo Switch 2 and may coincide with the Galaxy movie. Following the 2017 release of Super Mario Odyssey, this new installment is expected to be a significant, high-budget, open-world collectathon, or a new, large-scale 3D experience designed to drive console sales.
- Super Mario Bros. collection — Release in 2026. This is a rumored collection for the 40th anniversary that may include New Super Mario Bros. (DS), New Super Mario Bros. Wii, and New Super Mario Bros. 2 (3DS).
- Untitled Mario Party installment — Release in 2026 or 2027. While Jamboree was 2024’s main entry, a new title is expected early in the Switch 2’s lifecycle, likely utilizing new motion controls.
- Super Mario Bros. Wonder sequel — Potential release in 2028 and rumored to be in production.
This past Monday at the Super Mario Galaxy Movie direct, Donald Glover—also known as artist Childish Gambino—was revealed to be the voice of the cute, green dinosaur Yoshi. Here’s the final trailer for “The Super Mario Galaxy Movie.”
