When I first saw “Pride and Prejudice” (2005), it instantly became my favorite movie. I read the original book, along with other Jane Austen novels, and started watching the Netflix series “Bridgerton.” I was hooked on the drama, passion and scandal. Online, I saw that “Bridgerton” had captivated many other people, and that Jane Austen’s books were considered “classics” because of how frequently they’ve been read and adored. It led me to wonder: why is society obsessed with old-timey romances?
“Bridgerton” is a relatively new series available on Netflix. The first season, based on novels by Julia Quinn, aired Dec. 25, 2020. It has gained popularity throughout the years, especially when seasons 3 and 4 were released. The show centers around the Bridgertons, who are a noble family in 19th-century England. Each member of the family pursues their own romances, making for an exciting plot. However, the plot is not the only reason why people are hooked on “Bridgerton.” The casting of the actors also plays a big role. Many people reported that because of the show’s diverse castings, they find it more relatable and enjoyable to watch. However, regency romance viewers have found intrigue beyond just casting. Because “Pride and Prejudice” was written in the late 1700s, the language is more difficult to comprehend than “Bridgerton,” but the 2005 movie is still exciting. The first time I watched it, I could barely understand what anyone was saying, but I still enjoyed it thanks to body language and an easy-to-follow plot.
Regency romances are often characterized as having witty banter, strict social etiquette and being set in the “ton,” or high society; these stories focus on courtship, often featuring reformed rakes, wallflowers and arranged marriages, culminating in a guaranteed happy ending. Contrasted with modern-day standards, this made me wonder: is romance dead?
These days, people express their love with texting and social media, which are arguably less romantic than love letters. We’ve stopped promenading on nice days, kissing knuckles and deeply yearning. Is this why these regency romances are so attractive? People have always wanted what they don’t have, so watching these shows with an incredible yearn factor satisfies that craving that people have for true love and affection. And that, dear reader, is why they’re so popular today.
If you love regency romances but don’t know where to find them, or if you’re interested in them but don’t know where to start, I’ve included a list of movies and books that center around regency romance.
